Local Development Strategy

The new Western Somerset Local Development Strategy was completed and submitted to Defra in 2014 in a competitive bid process for funding from 2015 to 2020.

The Strategy was approved and £1.2m funding was granted to the Western Somerset area.

About us

LEADER is an established method of delivering rural development funds at a local level. It uses local knowledge to promote a joined-up ‘bottom up’ community-led delivery of Rural Development Programme grants. In England this is being delivered by Local Action Groups (LAGs) and it targets rural areas with specific needs and priorities.

A Local Action Group brings together individuals from local public, private and civil societies, who have been delegated powers of strategy and delivery. Through an agreed Local Development Strategy, LAGs are able to tackle important local priorities in a locally specific, innovative and participative way.

The Western Somerset LEADER Programme is run by a Local Action Group comprising people from land-based businesses, commerce, public and community sectors in the area.
